... I have a 1525 square foot ranch style house with a pool, spa, and central air conditioning. My summertime electric bill in past years have averaged over $500 per month. In evaluating the wisdom of adding a solar system, I used ROI logic. Would investing in a solar system equal or exceed the return I expected on my current portfolio? I expect a long term yield of about 8% per year. A 3KW solar system was forecast to save me over $2000 per year in electrical costs at current rates. As rate increased, that cost advantage will only increase more each year. The net cost of the system, after discounting the P.G.&E. rebate and the 30% Federal Tax Credit was approximately $24,000. At $2000 per year in electrical savings that yields approximately 8.3%. I'm currently on track to save over $2400 per year in electrical costs so I'm estimating my yield on my investment in solar electrical to be 10% the first year and increasing every year as rates rise.
